Low frequency (LF) 

Low-frequency RFID scanners, which operate at 125 kHz and have a read distance of about 10 centimeters, require the tag to be very close to the reader in order to communicate. Because low-frequency RFID requires close proximity, there is less chance of interference from other systems and channels. 

As a result, low frequency is commonly used in RFID door access control applications. A low-frequency RFID door lock is most likely to be used for business entrances and commercial office doors where users must be quite close to open the door. They may not be the best option when there is more space between the credential tag, the reader, and the entrance.

High frequency (HF)

This is the most typical commercial RFID door lock system. The fact that high-frequency RFID readers operate on the 13.56 MHz frequency and have a read range of 10 centimeters to 1 meter adds to their adaptability. The reader of a high-frequency RFID door lock for commercial entrances can be configured according to the layout of the area, which is a benefit. 

Because NFC and high-frequency RFID use the same frequencies, it is common to find high-frequency RFID door locks that support NFC-enabled devices, which are commonly used for payment processing and access control.

Ultra-high frequency (UHF) 

This RFID access control technology typically operates at 900 MHz, has the fastest scan speed, and the greatest read range, which can reach up to 100 meters depending on the tag. Ultra-high frequencies, on the other hand, are susceptible to interference due to their wide read range. If interference is not constantly managed, it can reduce the reliability of UHF communication and pose significant security risks if someone attempts to intercept data from RFID devices.

UHF readers, on the other hand, are commonly used for vehicle identification and in parking garages. Authorized vehicles can unlock the gate using a corporate RFID door lock system without having to pull out a phone or scan a badge at the gate. Furthermore, there are three types of RFID tags, each with its own set of capabilities. To continue signal output, active tags require a constant power source, such as a battery. Active tags also have an antenna that allows them to communicate via radio waves with nearby readers and other tags. Active tags are widely used for logging and documentation tasks due to their data reading and writing capabilities.

In semi-active tags, integrated circuitry is also battery-powered. These tags, also known as battery-assisted passive tags (BAP), do not start transmitting signals until they are close to an RFID door lock. When a signal from a nearby reader is detected, the internal battery starts providing the necessary communication to unlock the door.

The third type of RFID tag is passive tags. Passive RFID tags, rather than having an internal power source, use the magnetic field emissions from an RFID door lock to generate a current in the tag’s built-in antenna. Passive RFID tags are frequently less expensive than active RFID tags or BAP RFID tags.
